Have you ever tried... naming and identifying all of the South American countries on a map? Touring a Hispanic grocery store and limiting yourself to trying only items you'd never seen or heard of before? Speaking in Spanish with someone who doesn't speak English?
The student participants in Baltimore International Camp hadn't ever tried these things before, either, but they did and met with success during the 2010 camp program! The third annual Baltimore International Camp program was held August 9-13, 2010 at The Engineers Club. An on-going partnership between Global Pathways Project and Boys and Girls Club of Metropolitan Baltimore, this year's camp program served 24 students ages 9-13 from four Boys and Girls Club sites around Baltimore City.
Camp activities centered around a South American theme and included guest speakers, Spanish language lessons, city tours, taste challenges, ethnic dining, museum tours, dance lessons, games, art activities, and much more! The week ended with a closing reception at The Engineers Club in which participants shared and presented what they had learned about South America to their peers, family members, and invited guests.
GPP received a grant from the LEGO Children's Fund to support the 2010 Baltimore International Camp. The grant allowed GPP to add a new element to the camp, helping participants to discover basic principles of global interdependence by learning about how climate change is affecting people in South America. From access to water to how it affects production of chocolate, the participants got a hands-on lesson on climate change and how they play a role in reducing its effects on the lives of people around the world.
In addition to having fun during the action-packed week, participants were encouraged to explore, ask questions, and give everything a try. Many of them expressed afterward their appreciation for how the camp program exposed them to new cultures and perspectives. Global Pathways Projects hopes all the student participants will continue their worldly explorations with the willing, curious minds and spirit they brought to Baltimore International Camp!
