Baltimore International Camp 2008
  Baltimore International Camp 2008

Students at the 2009 Baltimore International Summer CampHave you ever tried ... naming and identifying all of the Middle Eastern countries on a map? Making hummus from scratch and without a recipe, using only your taste buds as a guide? Writing your name in Arabic? Looking for examples of Islamic influence in Baltimore City's architecture (hint: just about every building has some)?

The student participants in Baltimore International Camp hadn't ever tried these things before, either, but they did and met with success during the 2009 camp program! The second annual Baltimore International Camp program was held August 3-7, 2009 at The Engineers Club. An on-going partnership between Global Pathways Project and Boys and Girls Club of Metropolitan Baltimore, this year's camp program served 21 students ages 10-14 from 3 Boys and Girls Club sites around Baltimore City.

Camp activities centered around a Middle Eastern theme and included guest speakers, Arabic language lessons, city tours, cooking challenges, dining at Middle Eastern restaurants, museum tours, dance lessons, games, art activities, and much more! The week ended with a closing reception at The Engineers Club in which participants shared and presented what they had learned about the Middle East to their peers, family members, and invited guests.

In addition to having fun during the action-packed week, participants were encouraged to explore, ask questions, and give everything a try. Many of them expressed afterward their appreciation for how the camp program exposed them to new cultures and perspectives. As one participant wrote, "I learned that it's good to have an open mind and not always expect the norm." Another summarized their learning experience by stating "I liked learning about what's happening in the Middle East, but I didn't like the food from there. However, you may never know what you like until you try it."

Global Pathways Projects hopes all the student participants will continue their worldly explorations with the willing, curious minds and spirit they brought to Baltimore International Camp!
